Which is Better - AMD or Intel

This discussion is a decade old and will continue on for years to come. Both sides have a list of very convincing things to offer, it's up to you to decide which one is better, but here are the differences that can help you decide.

You may get the most fanciest of all laptops, with great features and looks. But then, what really matters is the real machine which lies beneath. And what I am talking about is the processor. Today, the market is flooded with quite a few processors, and amongst them, the most popular are Intel and AMD processors. Both of these just makes the buyer more confused and difficult for one to decide which is better, AMD or Intel. Well, let us find that out.

I still remember a few years back, I had invested a huge amount of money to get my PC, and this was about six or seven years back. It was huge and I had to clear quite a bit of space in my room to accommodate it. I am sure, if you must have seen them you must be knowing what I am talking about. They had huge CPU cabinets. Today, they would be hard to find even at the scrap dealer. Nowadays, what we have around is the laptops and notebook PCs. With more and more laptop manufacturers coming up with each unique feature in their respective machines, it really becomes a tough job to choose a laptop from AMD or Intel.

Amd Vs. Intel

For Laptops

Generally, most laptop users are concerned with simple mobility and the use of regular computer tools, like listening to music or watching a movie, using basic software like Microsoft Word or for the Internet. For these users, the main concern is the price. And that's why most would prefer to buy AMD; it will always be cheaper than an equally rated Intel counterpart.
The next tier of laptop buyers will always look for two major aspects when deciding to purchase a laptop, and that is the laptop performance and the price. They want a fast laptop that doesn't cost much and can be used to play decent single-player games. Again, I'd suggest the AMD because of the price.

For Desktops

A desktop enthusiast can get a lot better configuration on their computer because a desktop is cheaper than a laptop. Most desktop users today require at least some amount of gaming compatibility. This is where it gets a little tough to choose. There are some basic differences between AMD and Intel that I've listed below. Read them, find out what exactly it is you want to do with your computer and choose.

The Main Differences Between AMD and Intel

Outer Pin Structure

The reason you cannot use either processor on a single motherboard is the pins on the outside each processor. If you're buying an entire computer, you get to choose between the two, because both processors need a compatible motherboard. If you own a computer with an Intel chip inside it, you cannot use the same motherboard for an AMD chip. You will have to replace the motherboard along with the processor. This can be a problem as motherboards are quite expensive, therefore some users tend to stick to one brand.

Clocking Speed

If clocking speed was still a sole criteria for superiority (as it used to be in the old days), Intel would win hands down. But that's not the case anymore. Intel processors give you a higher clocking, which means they have a higher frequency of work done per second. That's just how it is built- Intel divides the total work down to the smallest possible divisions for simplicity and goes through it a high frequency. AMD, on the other hand, goes through data at a slower rate, but processes a lot more data per cycle. In the end, the amount of data processed by the AMD can be quite significant.
This is the reason why the processing frequency cannot be taken into consideration while selecting between the two brands. I only added this point to help you understand this, so you won't be confused by a dealer when he says Intel is better because it has more speed, just to make a sale.

Overall Performance

This is a rather tricky area. If you compare versions with the same ratings, you'll find that Intel beats AMD in most areas when it comes to performance. But, ever since AMD got hold of ATI, the AMD processor has a much higher compatibility with any ATI graphics cards. AMD started reworking their strategy at that time and integrated both systems quite well. So, if you're a gamer and want to buy an ATI graphics card, you'd be better off with an AMD processor.

There are, however, a few Intel processors that have integrated graphics support have turned out quite good for gaming purposes. As the market currently stands, the high-end AMD processors can give you only so much processing capability as the first generation Intel processors. Which keeps the performance market quite an open ground for the high-end Intel processors. If you're not really into gaming and want good performance for something like virtualizing your machine or video encoding, you can go with Intel.

Another category for gauging performance is multitasking abilities. For a software or an application, multitasking refers to its ability to divide its work into smaller pieces for faster computing. If you are using such software that allow multitasking, choose Intel, because of Hyper-Threading, a technique in Intel that allows faster, efficient multitasking.

Pricing

This is where the debate takes a huge detour. For all the numbers that Intel shows you to be better than AMD, there is one figure that most don't want to appreciate to be larger- the price. Current Intel processors may be better than AMD, but AMD processors are cheaper than Intel by 20% to 60%. Yes, that much. Most gamers will be under 30 years of age and they will agree that current-gen Intel is a little out of their reach. Which is why they prefer to stick to AMD. You can assemble your own computer with singular parts and AMD processor with a compatible graphics card for a price much, much lower than what Intel can go down to.

In conclusion, if you got the money, you can choose Intel. If not, AMD is just as good. Again, the type of computer or laptop you buy will heavily depend on what you're going to do with it. If it's just HD movies and stuff, you can buy a low-end configuration and save up on a lot of cash.

Uses of Computers in Hospitals

Of late, computers are being included in hospitals and medical clinics throughout the world. Some uses of computers in hospitals do not involve treating patients but help medical staff and doctors to handle information and data in a better manner.
The invention of computers started the revolution of Information Technology (IT) in the world, bringing modern concepts into the world. In the past few decades, offices, factories and business adopted computers to enhance their performance. The next were the households to adopt the computers as their new form of entertainment. Today, computers, along with Internet technology are being introduced into hospitals to enhance the performance of the medical facilities that are dispensed.

Application of Computers in Hospitals

The importance of computers in medicine is growing and spreading rapidly. The only disadvantage is that a full-fledged installation of all the computerized systems in hospitals is a lengthy and costly process. There are however, some hospital systems which already work on the basis of computers. Here are some prominent uses of computers in hospitals.

Handling Medical Data

Every day hospitals and clinics which are attached to it churn out enormous volumes of data regarding patients, ailments, prescriptions, medications, medical billing details, etc. Such medical records, are nowadays recorded into medical billing software. Such mammoth databases are known as Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and Electronic Health Records (EHR). These databases are operated by a set of computers and servers, and come in handy during medical alerts and emergencies. The concept of EHR is a bit broader than the EMR, as the database is accessible from different clinics and hospitals. Thus, a patient's medical history can be retrieved from any hospital by medical practitioners.

Scanning and Imaging

'Tests' are medical procedures where specified components of the human body are scanned. A test can be as simple as a regular blood test or it can be a complex CT scan. This process is often referred to as a medical imagery. In order to increase the precision of such procedures, computers have been adopted and integrated into the testing equipment. The Ultrasound and the MRI are the best examples where computers have been adopted, in order to make the process faster and precise. Thus medical tests and tools have become more advanced as a result of the use of computers.

Examination and Monitoring

Many systems are underway for the development of medical monitoring which will help humans to properly monitor their own health. In many cases doctors and surgeons also use sophisticated computer aided equipment to treat their patients. Such systems and procedures include, bone scan procedure, prenatal ultrasound imaging, blood glucose monitors, advanced endoscopy which is used during surgery and blood pressure monitors. Basically these medical tests and tools provide significant convenience to medical practitioners. You will find that major laboratory equipment and heart rate monitors have already been computerized in many hospitals.

Advantages of Computers in Hospitals

There are significant advantages of using computers in hospitals. The importance of computers in hospitals has also increased drastically due to the fact that the procedures have to be speedy to cater to a larger population and the medical services have to be more precise.

To sum up, the advantages of computers in hospitals can be summarized as follows:

  • Precise 'tests' and medical examinations
  • Faster medical alerts, which are more accurate time-wise
  • Enhanced data about a patients medical history
  • Precision in diagnosis
  • Precision in billing
  • Automated updating of medical history

The possibility of computers uses in the medical field are endless, facilitating medical help to hospitals and clinics all across the globe.

How Computers Changed the World

Computers have been one of the greatest inventions ever! They have changed the world by changing the way we think today and will continue to do so.

Fire is known to be man's first invention. But, little did he know then, that this effort was going to change his world so drastically. Since then, invention after invention, right from a wheel to a guillotine, changed a lot of things for mankind. Right from simple machines to complex mechanisms, these inventions have only brought about a sea change in the way we function today. For instance, invention of computers brought a technology in the world which had the power to multitask like none other machine created by man. It could store information, simplify tasks and organize work with just one instruction. Ever since, computers have been developed into smarter machines by honchos of leading information technology conglomerates.

How Computers Changed The World Over The Years

Revolutionized Business

Computers have changed the way a business functions in a large way. Back in the olden times, corporate houses rented spaces for running accounting departments. It took months together to figure out profit or loss that a business had made or suffered. Recording entries and other relevant data was done manually and most of it remained scripted. However, with the advent of computers, the concept of manual entries and use of human brain to remember and memorize company's financial operations became obsolete. This transformation was known as automation, which made computers the backbone of all new age businesses. Today, computers are used beyond bookkeeping purposes too. Almost everything that happens in an organization, right from its inception to its closure, is recorded, worked upon, evaluated and rectified with the help of computers.

Changed Our Lives

Imagining our lives without computers is next to impossible. Ubiquity of these machines goes to show our incorrigible dependence on them. Computers were initially used only in workplaces. However, they soon became a household name, which revolutionized everything from school homework to grocery shopping. When computers were supplemented by Internet, it caused a great shift in the way we functioned. It ironed out several creases in long distance communication. This gave an impetus to globalization, bringing the world closer and opening new avenues to explore the human reach. Over a period of time, computers enabled working from home, which created a new type of employment for many. This gave usage of computers, within the confines of homes a new dimension. As technology progressed, simple things such as shopping, booking tickets, buying a new house, searching for schools and colleges, applying to the same, researching for projects and medical information became a lot easier with entry of computers in every households. Thus, computers affected our lives in ways that remained blinded to the naked eye.

How Computers Change the Way We Think

Computer being an indispensable tool in our lives, has changed the way we think in more ways than one. Today, all you have to do to find answers is, just 'Google it'! The online world of blogging, instant messaging, chatting and social networking not only leaves virtual traces, but unites the world in a completely unimagined way. It has caused revolutions and added to the verve of celebrations in equal magnanimity. This powerful medium is the great mode of mass communication which affects out thinking by allowing people a platform to voice their opinions and stir discussions that have brought about a change in the world.

Computers have pushed us to see different worlds and experiences cultures. Although the growth is a virtual one, it's after effects are very much real. The revolution in Egypt is the latest example of how computers changed the world. Today the identity of information technology is computers. Invention of this machine has changed the world's perspective about cultures, economics, history and current affairs. The advent of computers has no doubt brought a revolutionary change in our existence, however it has a flip side too. Thus, using a computer for a better evolution in the coming decades remains a bigger challenge for the mankind.

Benefits of Overclocking

Overclocking a computer means enhancing it so that it functions beyond its capabilities. In most cases, it is the processor of a computer that is overclocked, but other components can also be subjected to this, so that the user can derive the maximum benefits.

People who are well versed and familiar with their computers will know all about overclocking their processor speeds in order to get enhanced performance. While it is not entirely safe to overclock a processor, it is also true that there are certain benefits of overclocking that can improve the efficiency of the machine, and make it far more responsive than the manufacturer ever imagined. It simply means that the speed of the computer is increased beyond the limitations that are set by the manufacturer, and it is for this reason that in most cases, people who own low performance and low end machines undertake this procedure.

The procedure can be carried out for the various components in the machine, and this includes the processor, the graphics unit and other components and hardware peripherals as well. Basically, anyone who wants maximum performance from their machine at the cost of damaging it, can overclock their computer and achieve this. The clock speed of a component refers to the speed and the frequency at which it oscillates when it is in motion, and hence overclocking means pushing something to run at a speed beyond its normal capabilities. Sooner or later, this will take a toll on the machine though, so this is a risk that one should be well prepared for.

What are the Advantages of Overclocking

The most important one is that the component that has been overclocked can function at a speed that is greater than normal. Hence, it can emulate a higher quality model with ease. For instance, a 3.0 GHz processor can be overclocked to run at 3.4 GHz and this will ultimately benefit the user. People who have bought components with budget restraints can make the most out of their hardware by overclocking them. Even people who like to derive the maximum value out of their components can utilize this method for best results. However, you must remember the risks involved, and this is why most regular users would not consider doing this.

People who like to play a lot of heavy duty games will find overclocking extremely beneficial for this very reason as well. PC gamers are always looking for ways to enhance their machine's performance because the configuration needs for the best new games are constantly rising. By overclocking them, they can play all the latest games without any lags and frozen frames, and they can do this without spending money on expensive gaming laptops or desktop computers. Learning how to overclock CPU is something that an experienced computer user can learn to do easily, but he should know all the intricate details about the same, before doing so. Some more small advantages which are a direct result of enhanced speed are as follows.

  • Saves money for the user.
  • Gives the user more options and hardware peripherals to work with.
  • Decreases booting time and loading time of the machine.
  • Increases frames per second rate in the machine, which is handy for games and movies.
  • Video encoding and decoding would also become faster.
  • The user can play all the latest games with ease.

All of these benefits are enough to entice many people to go ahead and do it, in spite of knowing all about the dangers as well. People who have done this before absolutely swear by it because they have seen the results with their own eyes, and for people who are contemplating the same, the only advice we can give is to go ahead and overclock their machine anyway.

Thank to Rahul Thadani

Dangers of Overclocking

People who overclock their machines are well aware about all the dangers and the risks of doing so, and they are prepared to take a chance. The sole aim of overclocking the components of a computer is to enhance their efficiency, and to make them work at a speed beyond their capability.
When we speak of overclocking with regard to a computer, we are talking about boosting the performance of the machine so that it can function faster and more effectively than expected by the manufacturer. The process is something that should only be undertaken by an experienced individual who is well versed in these matters, because with all said and done, it is something that can pose serious dangers and risks too.

The benefits of overclocking include pushing the machine's performance and speed, and this helps the users achieve a configuration that they did not expect, it helps them to save money and it gives them the option to use more hardware peripherals than expected, but along with this, there are several problems that need to be taken into consideration as well.

The Risks of Overclocking

It is possible to overclock the processor, the GPU, the RAM and other peripherals as well, so it is only natural that there will be certain repercussions of doing so. Moderate overclocking is something that almost every machine can handle, but when this process is pushed to the limit, the machine comes under severe threats from a variety of problems. This is especially true in cases where people overclock machines that are old and have been used extensively for many years. Such machines are unable to handle the strain of being overclocked and running beyond expectations, and there are several disadvantages that will arise as a result of that. With that in mind, here are the disadvantages that every computer owner who is planning to carry out this process, should be well aware of.

The biggest risk of overclocking is hardware overheating. Since these devices are not built to function at higher-than-recommended cycle speeds, they do tend to get extremely hot since all their components are working in hyper-drive. This is something that will affect any electronic device, so the user must be completely prepared for this. Using the machine in a room with low temperature is the best possible solution to this problem.
As hardware devices are overclocked, their power requirements also go up. This is something that can result in serious circuit damage since the components are designed to handle a fixed amount of voltage which should not be surpassed. This can cause the CPU to become very unstable, and this could inadvertently lead to fire hazards as well.
Since the system becomes very unstable when it is overclocked, other risks like loss of data, corruption of files on the system and system crashes also come to the fore and can cause serious issues for some people. With all of this known to you, you should remember to make an informed decision when you are overclocking your CPU and are actually carrying out the procedure.

In spite of all this though, the risk of fires and burned circuit boards is lesser today, because manufacturers are increasingly making machines that handle cooling more effectively. However, this does not mean that these risks are completely evaded, because sooner or later the computer will go into a state where the heat generated will be more than normal. Some people even use other materials like liquid nitrogen and other fluids to achieve the same, and needless to say, this is something that should be avoided because it will ultimately affect the internal components of the computer. Computer manufacturers say that they have no issues with such things, because what a computer owner does with his machine in the privacy of his home is entirely his business. But, a very real problem arises when sellers start selling overclocked machines and claim that their configurations are higher than what they actually are. This actually amounts to fraud, and such sellers can be sent to jail for such practices.

Overclocking a computer is something that only a computer enthusiast will undertake, especially because the process is a complicated one. Such people are well aware of the disadvantages and they are well prepared for the same as well, but in their opinion, the benefits of doing so are totally worth the risk that they are taking.

Why is My Computer So Slow

There are many reasons why your computer could be running slow. It could be due to problems associated with low memory in the RAM to the number of start up services that you have loaded into your computer. Let us go into the details of all these, in this article.
If your computer is running slow, you may be wondering if some virus has affected your system, or if your system is slowed down by the antivirus software that has been loaded. Well, you are on the right track. However, these may not be the only reasons why your computer has become slow. There may be other reasons which may be causing this problem. Let us take a look at some of these possible problems.

Why is My Computer Slow to Start Up

It often happens that you have a computer with the best of the configuration, a high memory RAM, a good amount of hard disk space and of course a very good high-speed processor, and yet your computer is slow to start up. The reason for this is that there are a good number of start up processes that you have initiated. Many times, when we install a software, we forget to uncheck the option to start the software during start up. Too many software running in the computer during start-up, may make the computer slow to start up. So, the way out of this problem, is to disable the functionality to start these software during start up. You can also browse the computer's start up services and disable all such services that have been programmed to start up when your computer boots up. Similarly, if there are any services that keep running in the background, you need to shut down those applications. These applications that run in the background, not only cause other processes that you are running to slow down, but may also make the computer slow to shut down. You can simply go into the 'Task Manager' of your computer, if you are using the Windows operating system, by hitting the Ctrl-Alt-Del keys together and end all the unnecessary applications that are running. However, reducing the number of start-up services in your computer, is a better way to counter this problem, because, disabling the applications individually, will not stop them from booting up during start-up.

Basic Causes for Slow Computer

Now, let us take a look at the basic reasons which may cause the computer to run slow.

Insufficient RAM

This is one of the basic reasons that may cause the computer to run slow. If you are using a software which takes up a good amount of RAM, then obviously, the other applications will run slow. Another important aspect that you need to take care of is 'paging'. When the RAM in your computer is full, the computer processor utilizes some space from your secondary storage device that is your hard disk to run the applications. Hence, it becomes very necessary that you provide some amount of free space in your RAM.

Virus Issues

This is what is considered the basic reason, why a computer is slow, and often, the conclusion is right. Adware, malware and spyware software can considerably reduce the computer performance. Of course the easy way out of this problem is to install an antivirus software in your computer. But one thing that you need to keep in mind is that, antivirus software though a necessity, can also reduce the performance of your computer. Hence, it becomes very important that you choose an antivirus software, which does not occupy a lot of RAM.

Defragmentation

This is one tip that I can provide you with. Defragment your computer at least once in a month or fifteen days. This reduces the clustering of files in the computer. To do so you just need to click the Start menu, go to programs, accessories, then to the system tools options and select the option for defragmentation. Also remember to delete temporary Internet files from your computer.

Corrupted Registry

For convenience, let us assume that everyone uses Windows. The Windows registry is like the DNA of the Windows operating system and stores all vital information about your system that includes: interface settings, installed programs and program settings, settings for drivers and hardware and personal user profile. This implies that if registry crashes or gets corrupted the entire system will stop working. When you install new drivers or devices, add and remove programs, open and close applications and change their settings, your registry becomes littered with corrupt entries. Your computer's performance is seriously hampered and causes system errors, freezes and crashes. To prevent your computer from slowing down, proper maintenance of the registry is vital.
So if you too are wondering why your computer is running so slow, you must have got some idea about how to resolve this problem. Your computer is just a machine and it cannot do anything on its own accord, unless you have prompted it to work in a particular way. Many times, we install software without checking each and every step of the installation process. It is in these stages that we are often asked if we want to install some unwanted software along with the software we are installing or if we want the application to start up every time the computer boots up. So follow the tips I just equipped you with. In most cases, taking simple precautions can ward off complex problems.

How Does Computer Memory Work?

Memory is an important part of the whole computer system, and a lot of changes in this technology have been recorded in the last few decades. Read the following article to know how it works.

Computer memory consists of a system of devices, which store data or programs on an electronic digital computer. The storage may be temporary or permanent, depending on the frequency of data retrieval. Each memory unit is made up of chips, which have a built-in fabrication of millions of transistors and capacitors. These tiny elements combine to store a single bit of data in its cell, in the form of binary digits (0 and 1). The capacitor acts as a holding cell for the binary data, whereas the transistor allows the memory circuitry to read or change the value of the data held in the capacitor. When these elements are connected in its chip, the capacitor is able to receive and store data sent by the CPU.

In the early 1940s, its capacity was limited to a few bytes. Acoustic delay line memory was developed by J. Presper Eckert in the same decade, which proved to be a milestone in the field of this technology. However, it was also limited to a capacity of up to a few hundred thousand bits in order to remain efficient. Later on, Williams tube and Selectron tube were developed in 1946, which used electron beams in glass tubes as a means of storage. The storage capacity of the latter was limited to 256 bits, whereas the former could store thousands of bits. By the end of the decade, Jay Forrester, Jan A. Rajchman, and An Wang developed magnetic core memory, which allowed its recall even after power loss.

A computer consists of a physical memory, which is in the form of chips that are inserted into the sockets (or slots) of the motherboard. The maximum amount of memory that can be added to the system depends on the type of motherboard. The second form is known as virtual memory, which is basically a small chunk of the hard drive. This part is used by the operating system when the available one is full, and can be increased or decreased using the System properties from the Control Panel. The data is written on the memory by the CPU, which sends a signal to the transistor, allowing the writing of data to the capacitor by depositing it as a single bit.

The address of each memory location is represented in hexadecimal (base 16) number system. The CPU keeps track of these locations, and performs the task of reading to and writing data from them. The transistors and capacitors are organized in its chip in the form of rows and columns. The most common type is RAM (Random Access Memory), which allows a much faster retrieval and storage of data. Because of its speed, it provides an optimal solution for storing data temporarily. However, it needs a constant flow of electricity to store data, and loses the data stored on its chip as soon as the computer is powered off.

When the computer is turned on, it loads BIOS (Basic Input Output System) from the ROM (Read-only Memory), and the memory controller checks all its addresses to ensure that there are no errors in them. The BIOS provides basic information about the boot sequence, storage devices, and various other components. Next, the OS (Operating System) is loaded from the hard drive into the system's RAM, which allows the CPU to have immediate access to the operating system. Any application opened on the computer is loaded into RAM, which enhances the performance of the computer by making faster data transfers.

Computer Storage Devices

There are different types of computer storage devices which are used. Using these storage devices will ensure that the storage space on the computer hard drive is left free. Scroll down for more information.

A storage device is necessary for recording data. One of the most important tasks performed by computers is storing data. Different types of devices are used to store data. The data stored is stores in digital forms. There are three types of data storage, namely primary data storage, secondary storage devices and tertiary storage devices. The classification of computer storage devices is made based on the task performed by the device. The primary storage device is commonly called random access memory, while the secondary storage device is the hard disk. The tertiary storage devices are removable mass storage devices. While the amount of data stored on the primary is less and is volatile in nature, while the secondary storage device have better storage space and also is non volatile in nature. Let's see the data storage types

Primary Computer Storage

The primary storage devices for computers are actually a part of the computer's memory. We have previously used the terms like RAM and ROM, but may not have know what they are exactly. They are the Random Access Memory (RAM) and Read Only Memory (ROM).

Random Access Memory
The Random Access Memory is used for storing information temporarily. When the computer is switched off, the information on the RAM is wiped off. The access rate of RAM is much higher. They are more expensive than the other types of primary storage devices.

Read Only Memory
It is used to permanently store data. Data can be stored on ROM, either when the computer is being manufactured or by the computer user. However, the disadvantage of this type of memory is that the data stored on ROM cannot be changed. The access rate necessary to get to the memory is much lesser as compared to the access rate of the RAM. Unlike the RAMs, ROMs are not expensive.

Secondary Computer Storage

Most of the storage devices we are acquainted with, come under this category. They are not a part of the processor. People make use of these devices, so that the storage capacity of the computer can be increased. Like the ROM, the secondary computer storage are also non volatile. The information stored on these devices is retained, even if the computer has been switched off.

Hard Drives
The hard drives are one of the most important of the secondary types of computer data storage devices, the hard drive types. Data is stored on the hard drives in the digital format on the hard drives. In the initial days of the computers, hard disks were like removable mass storage devices. However, with time they started coming as a part of the central processing unit of the computer. However, now there are external hard drives available as well.

Floppy Discs
This is a magnetic storage device, which is set in square plastic shell. They are available in different sizes, like 8 inches, 5 ¼ inches and 3 ½ inches. In the initial days floppy discs were very popular, however, with the advancements they got over shadowed by the other devices.

Compact Discs
Previously compact discs (abbreviated as CD) were used only for recording and storing audio files. Subsequently along with audio, video and other data is also stored on them. These discs can store data for long time. The data is stored on the CDs in optical format. Backup can be stored on the CDs.

Digital Versatile Disc
The format of storing data in the digital versatile discs (DVD) is similar to that of a compact disc. The difference lies in the storage capacity. There is six times more storage space in the DVD's as compared to the CD's. Like the CD's, DVDs are also used as backup device.

Flash Memory
With a lot of research came the flash memory. This storage devices for a computer is similar to the read only memory. However, there is a big difference between the flash memory and the ROM. Data from the flash memory can be erased in a matter of few seconds from the flash drives, which is not the case with the ROM's. At the same time, the data can be changed as per the requirement.

Blu-ray Discs
Blu-rays discs are abbreviated as BD, are used for high-definition video storage. It is often used by gamers. Blu-ray discs are similar to the CD's and DVD's in their looks. It is the memory space which makes all the difference between the CD's, DVD's and BD's. Blu-ray disc is an optical storage device.

USB Flash Drive
The USB flash drives consist of a NAND type flash memory. It has an integrated Universal Serial Bus (USB) interface. They are non-volatile and data can be rewritten on them. They are very small in size, but have very large memory space. There are some of the USB drives, where 1 million erase and write cycles can be carried out. On the other hand, some of them are known to retain data for as long as 10 years.

Memory Cards
Data is stored in digital format on the memory cards. They can be used in various electronic devices from hand held computers, mobile phones, cameras, etc. They are also rewritable. Although they are small in size, they can store a high amount of data.

With the constant advancement in technology, new storage devices are constantly getting added to the storage devices list. Along with the new devices, there is advancement that is being carried out to increase the access rate and the capacity of the data stored.
